Obituary

Lars Gjesdal was born December 18, 1926 at Plankinton to Lars and Inga (Hogstad Erickson) Gjesdal.  He attended school at Hopper Consolidated School near Plankinton and graduated from Mount Vernon High School.  Lars’ occupation was ‘cattle and grain farmer’ which he did his entire life.  However Lars’ true career was caregiver.  He took care of his mother in the home they shared until she died in 1985.  He then cared for his sister-in-law, Lena Gjesdal until her death.

Lars had three passions in life:  Sons of Norway, being a republican and the Aurora County Historical Society.  He was appointed a state senator in 1962 and served one term.  Lars was the chairman of the Aurora Co republican party for many years and served as state delegate to the republican convention from Aurora Co multiple times.  Lars also served as president of Sons of Norway and was a very proud 50 year member of this society.  He also served as president of the Aurora Co Historical society for over 30 years and was instrumental in establishing and maintaining the Aurora Co Historical Museum in Plankinton.

Preceding Lars in his death were his parents, 5 brothers and 1 sister: George (Lena), Marlin, Ruth (Olaf) Jacobson, Leonard (Jurene), Irvin, Norman (Jean).

Lars is survived by a sister-in-law, Thelma Gjesdal, many nieces and nephews and four special caregivers, his nephew, Gary Gjesdal, Rocky Von Eye, Bonnie Ellisand and Russ Thorsen.

I ALWAYS ENJOYED VISITING WITH LARS WHILE HE WAS A FIRESTEEL. MY HUSBAND LOVED SHARING POLITICAL VIEWS WITH EACH OTHER. HE DID SO MUCH FOR THE AURORA CO HISTORICAL SOCIETY TOO. A WONDERFUL FRIENDLY PERSON. HE WILL BE MISSED

It was always a joy to see Lars at Firesteel while visiting my mother. He always had a wave and a smile. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

In earlier years Buddy Christmas Cards were the first we would receive. We enjoyed visiting him when traveling to SD. We were so glad we got to visit him just a few days ago.
Rest in peace faithful servant.
