Mildred Merriman died from a series of health problems resulting from a car accident in Kearney, Nebraska in 2010 and a recent pelvic fracture. She moved to Fargo after the car accident in 2010 to be near her daughter, Connie Oberembt and family.
Mildred Merriman was born in Highmore, March 14, 1922. She was raised and educated in a rural grade school near her family's farm south of Highmore and at the Highmore Junior High and High School. In her early years, she grew up on a large farm, and, at a young age, helped her mother to feed the many hired hands at the farm. Mildred worked in Onida and Wessington Springs after graduating from high school, during which time she met Vernon Merriman at a dance. She joined Vern in Seattle while he was waiting for his orders, and the two were married in Seattle on December 23, 1942. She and Vern moved to Mitchell in 1947, and Mildred worked at Longfellow Elementary School in the 1950's. When Vern began his business in 1962, she helped him with the business by doing the accounting and finances.
Mildred's talents were quilting and ceramics. Working with the quilting group at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell, her designs were highly praised and helped the Methodist Conference raise many funds for their programs. While Vern was president of the South Dakota Independent Oilman's Association, they traveled extensively. One of her favorite memories was attending the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC. Upon retirement, Mildred and Vern traveled in the winter to Arizona for 13 years. They also enjoyed their Mitchell friends and spending time with family in Fargo and Dallas. Every fall, she looked forward to having many hunters to the house for dinners during pheasant hunting season. Mildred was widely known for her baking, particularly her lefse, doughnuts, and cookies, something that her family and all of the hunters enjoyed. Most of all, she was very proud to have been married to Vern for 67 years, until his death in October 29, 2010.
Mildred is survived by daughter, Connie (Al) Oberembt, Fargo, ND; son Jerry (Deby) Merriman, Dallas, TX; granddaughter Cassandra (Jason) Glynn, Fargo, ND and their children Max, Henry and Annabelle; grandson Craig (Sarah) Merriman, Dallas, TX, and their children Grant, Nolan and Clark; and Paige (Ryan) Vincent, Dallas, TX and their child Reid.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Vern, her parents Etna and Lizzie Hague, her brother Doug, and her sisters June and Evelyn. Her only living sibling is Jessie Swanson, who lives in Oregon.
