DatesJune 24, 1935 - September 28, 2013
Darwin Delmer Nuss was born to Arthur and Adeline (Fuerst) Nuss on June 24, 1935 in Tripp SD. He attended school in Tripp and graduated from Tripp High School in 1953. He joined the Air Force right out of high school. He was a photographer in The Air Force. After his four years of service in the Air Force he returned to Mitchell and worked several years as a photographer for the Daily Republic. This is where he met his wife, Shirley Jarabek and married her on May 20, 1961.
While working at the newspaper he also managed the Mitchell Moose Lodge for nineteen years. Around 1985 he took a job managing the Elks for approximately three years. He then ventured to his Marine business. He worked at Dakota Pork and after retiring from Dakota Pork he ran the Marine business fulltime. He sold his Marine business to help and aid Mitchell Vo-Tech in the motor sports area, retiring in June of 2010. But retirement fell short as he began driving for the railroad transport service until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge since 1967 receiving the highest honor of the Pilgrim Degree in May 1983. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
When Darwin was not busy, he enjoyed being with his grandchildren, playing cards, boating, fishing and telling stories.
Darwin is survived by his five children: Randy (Faithe) of Mannington WV, Lisa (Glen) Weber, Tim, Jeff (Donna) and Stephanie (Steven) Dirkes, all of Mitchell; sisters: Sally (Jack) Tucek, Platte, Karen (Dan) Weber, Tripp, Gloria (Chuck) Oorlog, North Sioux City NE and Debbie (Todd) Kenworthy, Sandpoint ID; brother, Dale (Jan) Nuss, NH; eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.

Terry and I send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to your family. Since there were many years between our ages, I didn't have the same shared memories as my brothers and sister. My memories are of Dar as an adult with a family he cherished, the cousin who people would seek out for his humor and stories, the son who provided comfort and kindness to his aging parents, the fisherman who shared fishing stories and fishing holes with Wips, Velma, and me, the cousin I didn't really know through my interactions, but the cousin I knew through my observations and stories shared at the 4th of July gatherings, weddings, anniversaries, and family get togethers. With love and caring, Tammy (cousin)

I was not able to enable the JAVA script so please pass this note on to the Darwin Nuss family:
My heart goes out to all of you. Carolyn and I have you in our prayers and thoughts. I remember Darwin with much fondness. As one of the younger cousins, I always looked up to him. He brought so many new interesting items and ideas into our lives. My favorite grade school picture is the one that he took--it was in the second grade. His spirit and attitude are what I give thanks for. May pleasant memories help with the loss you feel. With love, your cousin Ron.
