Lois Burdell Nelson was born October 29, 1924 at Mitchell, to John and Alida (Thompson) Berg of rural Mount Vernon. She attended Christopher Country School and graduated from Letcher High School in 1942. She was an accomplished pianist and accompanied her children and many other singing groups for over sixty years. Burdell graduated from the Methodist School of Nursing in Mitchell as a Registered Nurse in 1946. On June 30, 1946, she married Theodore John Nelson at the Trinity Lutheran Church. She and Ted had three sons in four years and later had a daughter and another son.
She became Director of Nursing at the Storla Sunset Home in 1962 and was named the Administrator in 1970. She received state wide recognition for the financial well being of the Storla Sunset Home for maintaining nearly 100% occupancy. In 1990 Burdell retired and they moved to Mitchell. She was a lifetime member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, also a member of WCTU, John Birch Society and an active member of the Republican Party.
She is survived by five children: Ted Nelson Jr. and his wife, Pat of Letcher; Milton Nelson and his wife, Sandra of Mitchell; Dr. John Nelson of Spearfish; Janet Markhardt and husband, Tim of Sioux Falls; and Calvin Nelson of Redfield; eight grandchildren: Drew Markhardt; Wynn Markhardt; Bjorn Nelson; Chelsea Nelson; Elliot Nelson; Hans Nelson; Jason Nelson and his wife, Tiffany; Steve Nelson and his wife, Angela and two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Elizabeth Nelson; one brother, Lowell Berg and his wife, Pearl of Mitchell and two sisters-in-law, Violet Berg of Greenville, NC and Rosaline Nelson Battson and husband, Art of San Diego, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted, one brother, Arland, a grandson, Mark Nelson and her parents.
