Obituary

Alvin M. Lau was born February 10, 1924 in Douglas County near Armour, SD to Marcus F. and Minnie (Bertram) Lau.

He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1942.  He married Lavon E. Bucknell from Alexandria, SD on December 3, 1947 in Mitchell, SD.  Their first home was in Columbus, NE where he managed the Columbus Paint and Wallpaper Co.  They returned to Mitchell, SD in 1948 and he went to work for Northwestern Public Service Company and was employed by them for 40 ½ years.  He transferred to their Madison, SD office as Division Manager in 1966 and to Aberdeen, SD in the same capacity in 1971.  He was promoted to Vice President of Consumer Affairs in 1979 and moved to their General Offices in Huron, SD.  He retired in February 1989.

He was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Omaha and past member of Holy Spirit in Mitchell, Mitchell Elks 1059, and UCT.

He was very active in civic affairs in the communities he lived.  In Mitchell he served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, and the Jaycees.  He was vice president and secretary of the Rotary Club and treasurer of the Corn Palace Committee.  Also, while living in Mitchell he served as president of the Crippled Children’s Hospital and School PTA in Sioux Falls, SD.

In Madison he served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, vice president of the Madison Industrial Development Corp., board member of the Kiwanis Club and Senior Citizens Center and also the Madison Airport Commission.

While in Aberdeen, he was president of the Chamber of Commerce, vice president and treasurer of the Rotary Club, on the board of the Directors of the United Way, Brown County Council for the Aging and the Metropolitan Club.  Advisory boards he served on included Northern State University-Business Division, Presentation College-SD Foundation of Private Colleges and with SDAD Communication Service for the Deaf.

In Huron he was a board member of the Greater Huron Industrial Development Corp., the Beadle County Coalition on Aging, past president of the Mr. and Mrs. Dance Club and past chairman of the Huron Chamber Ambassadors.

They moved back to Mitchell in July of 1994.  They continued to live there until moving to Omaha, NE on November 30, 2007

He is survived by his wife, Lavon; daughter, Sandy Knockenhauer and husband, George; son Douglas; grandson, Michael Knockenhauer and wife, Cate and two great grandsons, Michael Jr. and Jack all of Omaha, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents.  

Memorials may be directed to Quality Living, Omaha NE or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

My condolences to the family. Al was a terrific man and will be greatly missed. Special greeting to Doug who worked with me in Huron. His dad was always concerned that he do a good job and he always did. We will keep your family in our prayers.

Al was a great community minded person as is evidenced by his parcipitation in various organizations in the communities in which he lived.

My deepest sympathies go to his son Doug with whom I worked at the NW Bank in Huron while they lived there. He is a special guy as was his father.

My deepest sympathy to the Lau family. I worked with Al right out of high school at NWPS for several years. He was a great person and am sure will be missed by all.
