Leona “Jan” Young was born on June 27, 1921, in Tripp, SD, to John and Clara (Heirigs) Janish. She grew up and attended schools in Kimball and graduated from Kimball High School. On July 21, 1943 Jan married Leonard (Bill) Young in San Diego, CA. She was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy having graduated as a R.N. from St. Joseph Nursing School in Mitchell in 1942. For Jan, family was number one. She enjoyed feeding the birds, gardening, walking, sewing, doing her puzzles, baking, basketball, the Minnesota Twins, dancing the polka and traveling the world. Our mother will be remembered for her generosity, open mindedness, creativity, humor, adventurous spirit, and heart of gold.
Jan is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her seven children: Mary Kay (Norm) McNary of Hot Springs, AR; Pat (Kathy) Young of Rochester, MN; Elizabeth (Spence) Zielenski of Sioux Falls, SD; Susan (Tim) Young of New Delhi, India; Michael (Glenda) Young of Santa Maria, CA; Laurie (George) Ellis-Young of KAUST, Saudi Arabia; and Tom (Kim) Young of Mitchell, SD; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ray (Doris) Janish of Kimball, SD; two sisters, Margaret Rueland and Clara Wallace McGregor of Kimball, SD.
