Leona “Jan” Young was born on June 27, 1921, in Tripp, SD, to John and Clara (Heirigs) Janish. She grew up and attended schools in Kimball and graduated from Kimball High School. On July 21, 1943 Jan married Leonard (Bill) Young in San Diego, CA. She was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy having graduated as a R.N. from St. Joseph Nursing School in Mitchell in 1942. Jan worked as an R.N. from 1962-1983 at Brady Memorial Nursing Home in Mitchell.
For Jan, family was number one. She enjoyed feeding the birds, gardening, walking, sewing, doing her puzzles, baking, basketball, the Minnesota Twins, dancing the polka and traveling the world. Our mother will be remembered for her generosity, open mindedness, creativity, humor, adventurous spirit, and heart of gold.
Jan is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her seven children: Mary Kay (Norm) McNary of Hot Springs, AR; Pat (Kathy) Young of Rochester, MN; Elizabeth (Spence) Zielenski of Sioux Falls, SD; Susan (Tim) Young of New Delhi, India; Michael (Glenda) Young of Santa Maria, CA; Laurie (George) Ellis-Young of KAUST, Saudi Arabia; and Tom (Kim) Young of Mitchell, SD; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ray (Doris) Janish of Kimball, SD; two sisters, Margaret Rueland and Clara Wallace McGregor of Kimball, SD. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill in 2005; her parents, two brothers: Albert Janish and Louis Janish and two sisters: Maxine White and Loretta Fuegen.
We are very grateful for the kind care given our mother by Dr. Paul Rasmussen, the staff at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, Firesteel Healthcare Center, and her beautiful care givers: Michele, Pat, Cheryl, Linda, Sandy and Nancy.

Thinking of you at this time of your Mother's passage.
Surely she lives on in all of you and her grandchildren, and that is a great comfort to have had such a wonderful Mother.

To my cousins and families: You have our deepest sympathies. My mother could not have had a more tender-hearted sister who was always there for her. There was rarely a conversation I had with my mom where Aunt Leona's name did not come up with praise or excitement for what they had planned for the day. We are so thankful for your mother.

Laurie and family,
How wonderful that you could all be together for her transition. She must have been (and is!) so proud of you all. Your world will be forever changed. My sympathies.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. What a blessing to be at her side as she transitioned. I also had that privilege with my mother almost 5 years ago. She also waited for all family members to arrive. Isn't it magnificent how the soul knows when it is time! Sending hugs and loving energy. Janet and Richard
