Lawrence Phillips, 90, Mitchell, died Monday, October 29, 2007 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Funeral services will be Thursday, November 1, 2007, 10:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6-8PM Wednesday evening at the Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Lawrence Albert Phillips was born February 27, 1917 at Forestburg, SD to Scott and Grace (Amick) Phillips. He attended country school in Jerauld County and graduated from Wessington Springs High School. He attended Dakota Wesleyan University and graduated from South Dakota State University. He was an All-State football player at Wessington Springs and also played football at DWU and SDSU. He enlisted in the US Navy, but was medically discharged. On March 13, 1946 he married Helen Bridenbaugh in Mitchell. He farmed all his life in the Letcher area until his retirement in 1987 when he moved to Mitchell. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, American Legion, Mitchell Senior Citizens Center and had been a member of the United Church of Christ in Letcher.
He is survived by his wife Helen, one son, Mark Phillips and wife Sue of Goose Creek, SC, two daughters, Jennifer Ehlers Chance and husband Denton of Letcher, SD; Joyce Olson and husband Doug of Artesian, SD; two sisters, Mavis Bolling of Mitchell, SD;
Eunice Postma and husband Marvin of Weatherby Lake, MO; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, LaVerne, an infant sister, Imogene Phillips. one grandson, David Olson, one son-in-law, Gary Ehlers, two brothers-in-law, Harold Newell and Earl Bolling, and a sister-in-law, Norma Phillips.
