Sylvester Anthony Thiry was born August 14, 1925 at rural White Lake to Peter and Loretta (Mairose) Thiry and was the oldest of five children. He was born on the family farm in Brule County and attended Thiry School through the eighth grade. In 1951 he was drafted by the US Army and served in the Korean War.

On June 8, 1953 he married Ramona Hoing at Kimball, SD. Sylvester worked for Nels Kristensen until 1954 when they purchased the Joe Thomas farm twelve miles northwest of White Lake. It was there they raised their eight children and continued to farm until 1985 when they moved to town.

Sylvester served on the Patton Township Board and White Lake School Board.  He was also a member of the Midstate Telephone Board of Directors for thirty-nine years. He was also a member of the Saint Peter’s Catholic Church and the American Legion, Post 96.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Ramona of fifty-nine years; children: Mary (Butch) Reinesch of Sioux Falls SD, Mike (Kimberly) Thiry of Moorcroft WY, Catherine (Kim) Heintzman of Boise ID, John (Pat) Thiry of Butte NE, Teresa Thiry-Moeller of Kimball SD, Ed (Lynn) Thiry of White Lake, SD, Tim Thiry of White Lake, SD, Helen (Terry) Thiry-Chmela of Oacoma, SD; twenty-five grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Loretta Thiry; two sisters:  Adeline Whittenhagen and Caroline Schoenfelder; two brothers:  Charles Thiry and Pat Thiry; and one son-in-law, Bill Moeller.

Our sincere sympathy is sent to your family. We have such fond memories of Sylvester. He was a wonderful man. He always loved to visit with us when we were back in White Lake. He will be missed. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Ramona and family, we are saddened to hear that Sylvester has passed away. We will miss his funny wit an humor. Marlene especially appreciated his blonde jokes. He will be missed and may God Bless You during this time.
