Obituary

Leona J. Summers was born July 8, 1919 in Alexandria, SD to Barney and Angela (Schroeder) Majerus.  She attended school in Alexandria, graduating from high school in 1937. On May 2,  1946, she married Charles H. Summers.

Leona was an officer at Commercial Bank in Mitchell where she worked for 20 years until her retirement. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, altar society, and prayer group. She volunteered at Brady Memorial Home and enjoyed her 500 card group for over 50 years.

She enjoyed needle work, knitting, crocheting and crewel. As her eyesight failed, she made knotted cord rosaries which were distributed to many people around the world.

Leona was a great listener with a quiet presence, which left joy in all her loving relationships as wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She is survived by 3 daughters: Mary Schumacher and husband Frank of Blair, NE; Carol and husband Dale Sorenson of Oak Park, Il; Janet and husband Reed Smith of Tucson, AZ; three sons; Raymond Summers and wife Colette of Keystone, SD; Frank Summers of Omaha, NE; Barney Summers and wife Robin of Indianapolis, IN; eleven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a step-grandchild, and a sister Dorothy Heinz, Mitchell, SD.

Leona is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Charles Summers.

Our thoughts and prayer are with you all during this difficult day. We have many great memories of your Mom and Dad and always enjoyed visiting with them when we made it to Mitchell. We had visited your Mom in the last few years and she was always a joy to visit with. We will all cherish the memories and the joy they have brought to all.

Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in every thought and prayer. I am sorry I could not be there.
