Richard William Mentele was born in Mitchell to Edward and Frances (Haas) Mentele. He attended Notre Dame grade school and graduated from Mitchell Senior High in 1970. He then attended Mitchell Tech and studied architectural drafting. In July of 1976 he married Karen (Kelly) Peschong and they had four children. They divorced in 1997. Rick had recently retired having worked forty-one years with the South Dakota Department of Transportation as a Journey Transportation Technician. He had received recognition by the state for his forty years of service. He was a member of the Avera Queen of Peace Wellness Center.
In High School he was a pitcher with the American Legion baseball team. His love for baseball led him to be an avid fan of the St Louis Cardinals. He was known to keep team statistics for them as well as for Mitchell Kernels Basketball. He had a passion for genealogy and had worked for years on the Mentele family tree. Rick corresponded with many relatives from all over, even as far away as Germany.
He is survived by three sons: Rian Mentele and his wife Gladys Reyes of Oxnard, CA; Randall Mentele and his wife Lindsey of Seattle, WA; and Nicholas Mentele of Strandburg, SD; his mother, Frances, Mitchell; two grandchildren: Logan Zundel, Castlerock, CO, and Izabella Mentele, Oxnard, CA; two brothers: Reg Mentele and his wife Suzan of Mitchell; E Steve Mentele and his wife Mary Allison of Rapid City; four sisters: Kae Box of WhiteRight, TX; Jeanne Ledbetter of Garland, TX; Dixie Rivers of Box Elder, SD; and Laurie Mentele of San Rafael, CA and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father in 1971 and a daughter, Teresa in 2000.

Thank you, Kristine, for posting this. I rellay missed it this year. We used to sing it at St. Margaret's and we loved it!! It's a special part of Easter Vigil and very spirit-filled. Our first Easter Vigil there, we sat next to an hispanic family who sang the verses right along with the choir (the rest of us sang the refrain). That was so special to our family. That's when we first met that family. When we started Easter Vigil at SJA, I thought we'd have to give up Resusito. I was pleasantly surprised. (although I rellay wanted to join in the refrain) I just listened to your post so I could hear it this year. Thanks.

Deeply saddened by the news of Rick's death. He always brought laughter and smiles into the office. My sympathies go out to his family.
