Richard August Vogel was born October 23, 1937 to August and Erna (Semmler) Vogel at Armour SD. The family moved to the Ethan area and Richard graduated from Ethan High School. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1954.
On December 26, 1958 he married (Mary) Joann Olson in Mitchell. To their union two sons were born: Rick Vogel, Faribault MN and Randy (Kelly) Vogel, Hastings, MI.
He served in the military for twenty-one years including the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal by President Nixon May 28, 1969. He was also awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal September 18, 1972. Richard retired from the Air Force as a personal superintendent in September 1975 with the Rank of Master Sergeant.
He worked as the Veteran Service Officer for Davison County from July 1976 and in 1995 the Welfare Office was added to his position. He retired December 17, 2004.
He was a long time member of the First Lutheran Church and also a member of the DAV and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Joann; two sons: Rick and Randy (Kelly); one grandson, Ryan Vogel of Hastings, MI and three granddaughters: Kayla Vogel of Hastings, MI, Jennifer (Stephen) Vogel Knoll and Morgan Vogel of Virginia; two great-grandchildren of Virginia; four siblings: one sister, Anita (Duane) Honomichl of Mitchell, three brothers: Calvin (Judy) Vogel and Leland (Grace) Vogel both of Mitchell, Byron Vogel of Minnesota and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Erna Vogel; his brothers: Raymond and Kenneth Vogel; his sister-in-law, Barbara Vogel and his parents-in-law, Hans and Lela Olson.
