Viola Mae Wittstruck was born September 24, 1929 to Walter J. and Mildred L. (Pope) Powers at Avon, SD. Shortly after she was born, the family moved to a farm south of Mitchell. She completed 8th grade at a country school and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1947. Following high school graduation, Viola worked as a nurse’s aid at Methodist Hospital for several years.
In 1954 she married Frank R. Wittstruck in Mitchell and they were later divorced. She worked nights as a waitress at Loretta’s Truck Haven Cafe for 18 years and also worked days at the Red Owl Grocery store until it closed. She then worked at the Holiday Inn for 27 years as a prep cook and baker. She retired in 2004.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She loved to fish and hunt. After retiring she enjoyed traveling with her brother, Howard.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth (Mary Jo) Wittstruck and Dwight Wittstruck both of Mitchell; two brothers, Howard C. Powers of Monahans, TX and Harold Powers and wife, Eleanor Powers, Glendale, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents.
