Violet Wooner was born May 7, 1920 to Wilhelm and Bessie (Totton) Claus at Lucas, SD. She grew up on the family homestead north of Lucas, in Gregory County. She attended East Gray grade school and attended Burke High School in Burke, SD.
She was employed at Franks Café, in Gregory, where she got her start as a cook. She married Benjamin Wooner November 13, 1950 at Chamberlain, SD. They moved to Mitchell where she worked as a cook at the Lawler Café, Methodist Hospital, the Holiday Inn and the Happy Chef in Sioux Falls. In 1982 she retired and moved to the Cathedral Square Apartments.
Violet was a member of the Moose Lodge for fifty-one years and a Life member of the American Legion. From 1986 until 2002 she was a volunteer at the RSVP Thrift store.
She is survived by her daughters: Joan (Will) Short, Rapid City; Dorothy Graves and Connie (Norm) Couch, Aberdeen; son, Dale Wooner, Mitchell; two brothers: Carl Claus, Fredoina, KS and Claris Claus, Gregory; six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin in 1971, her parents, her brother, Harold Claus and her sister, Almeta Jacobsen.
