Darwyn John Jorgenson was born on June 16, 1930 in Watertown, SD to Henry and Mabel (Popham) Jorgenson. He attended country schools in Summit, SD. He graduated from high school in 1948 at Corona, SD. After high school he worked for Red Heinje on his farm. He worked one year for John Deere in the Distribution Warehouse in Sioux Falls, SD.
When Darwyn received his draft notice he enlisted in the Air Force. He spent the next twenty years in Communication Maintenance of which seven years was in communications school as an instructor, course supervisor and superintendent. He spent duty in France, Germany, Guam, Thailand and Thule, Greenland besides several stateside bases. While on duty he received several awards including the Army Commendation Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal and a Ribbon with one oak leaf cluster.
After the Air Force duty he was a cabinet maker, installer and did propane gas equipment maintenance for Empire Gas. It was this job that brought him to Emery, SD. He worked as janitor for Emery Public School, he farmed for three years. He started working as clerk/carrier at the Emery Post office and his last three of his fifteen years as Postmaster. He served as sexton for the Emery Community Cemetery, served on the Emery City Council and delivered Meals on Wheels for the Senior Meal Program. He restored two old cars and several old tractors. He made time to go hunting prairie dogs, wild pigs and turkeys with family members and truly loved every minute of time spent together. Darwyn married Barbara Burckhardt on December 30, 1983 at First Lutheran Church Chapel in Brookings, SD.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Kay Determan and husband, Gordon, Alexandria, SD; his step-children, Dr. Darrell Burckhardt, Joy Butler; five grandchildren: Megan, Cody, Kierra, Tasha and Shaina; four step-grandchildren: Paul, James, Nathan and Nicole; sisters, Colleen Dunfee, Blum TX and Marjorie (Fonton) Fenhaus, Rapid City, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Darrell, Dale, Dennis and Sherman and one sister, Shirley Purdy and one stepson, Bradley Burckhardt.
