Obituary

Gary Dean Plagmann was born March 14, 1944 on the family farm near Alexandria, SD to Elmer and Luella (Brakke) Plagmann. He attended country school near his home and graduated from Alexandria High School.

Gary married Sheryl VandenHoek on April 20, 1974. He spent nearly forty years of his career working in the telecom engineering field and created many friendships through his work in South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. He was employed by Martin and Associates and was a member of the SD Army National Guard. In his retirement years he worked part-time as a courier for Avera Lab Services. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Alexandria and later became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. He loved spending time gardening, woodworking, playing with his cats and spoiling his grandson, Aiden.

Gary is survived by his wife; his two daughters: Heather (Todd) Mergen, Sioux Falls and Katy (Ryan) Stulc, Rapid City; grandson, Aiden Mergen; three sisters, Lois (Don) Pueppke of Alexandria, Linda Werning, Clayton and Diane Hansen, Pierre; his parents-in-law, Lloyd and Irene VandenHoek, Mitchell; two sisters-in-law, Laura (Jack) Docken, Mitchell and Marcia (Jim) Jarratt, Granbury, TX and five nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-in-law, David Hansen and Albert Werning and his nephew, David Pueppke.

Dear Sheryl & family, I just noticed the information about Gary. As several have commented, I hope the memories of Gary are helpful and that the spirit of compassion has been a strong presence for you.. I always enjoyed visiting with him and felt that he was someone who added to life.

My prayers go out to you and your family. I am so sorry I did not know Gary passed away otherwise I would have been at the funeral. I worked and took care of him at HSC. I just loved that.

Sheryl and family I was so sorry to hear of Gary's passing but we know he is in a better place and at peace. He was always busy with his little projects and I enjoyed helping him at the store when he was looking for those hard to find items.
