John Casper Feiner was born in Mitchell on Oct. 19, 1933, to Albert and Dorothy (Bauer) Feiner. He graduated from Ethan High School in 1951. He was quarterback for the 1950 undefeated Ethan High football team, was on the 1951 state tournament basketball team and was on the track team – his pole vault record still stands. He was on the first Ethan team to go to the state Junior Legion baseball tournament. He attended the University of South Dakota, then joined his father at Ethan Dairy Products. He purchased the business in 1968 and retired in 1992. On Aug. 22, 1965, he married Phyllis Dunn and they raised three daughters. He was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and a member of the church choir since he was 16. He was Ethan's mayor for six years and served on the City Council for 10 years. He was a member of the state amateur basketball board for 40 years and served as President for 36 years. He was a longtime member of the South Dakota Dairy Association, serving as President for two years. For many years, he maintained the Ethan High football field and was time keeper for the boys and girls basketball teams.
He is survived by three daughters: Sue (Greg) Horstman, Mitchell; Sharon Feiner (Tim Larson), Minneapolis, MN; Kathy (Scott) Wosje, Chanhassen, MN; two grandchildren, Blake and Lauren Wosje, nine brothers and sisters: Francis (Bernice) Feiner, Ethan; Keith (Janice) Feiner, Ethan; Mary Ann Wethor, Mitchell; Don (Pat) Feiner, Crystal Lake, IL; Chuck (Mary Sue) Feiner, Spencer; Therese (Dennis) McCrary, Brooklyn Park, MN; Barbara Ann (Robert) Bogg, Denver, CO; Carol Jean (Ed) Bowar, Sioux Falls; and David (Leona) Feiner, Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis in 2002, and one brother, Robert.
