Eugene F. (Gene) Patzlaff was born June 2nd, 1927 to Frank and Dora (Rodenberg) Patzlaff in Hanson County, South Dakota. He spent his first eight years of grade school at Springlake Independent #20 and graduated from Farmer High School in 1945. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church at Spencer, SD and was a member there serving on the church council for a number of years. On March 6, 1949 he married Elsie Klinger at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. They continued to make that their church home until a tornado destroyed the church in 1998; they then transferred to First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD and have made that their church home since. He was on the Springlake Township Board for a number of years and lived on the same farm for nearly eighty years.
Gene is survived by his wife, Elsie; four sons: Don (Dixie) Patzlaff, Alexandria, SD, Larry Patzlaff, Alexandria, SD, Morris (Roxanne) Patzlaff, Sioux Falls, SD, Jeff (Martha) Patzlaff, Platte, SD; his brother, Orval Patzlaff, Mitchell, SD; his sisters-in-law, Beth Patzlaff, Lincoln, CA, Ruth Eilts, Mitchell, SD, Betty (Don) O’Neill, Fulton, SD and Mary (Court) Hall, Fulton, SD; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Therman, Vernon, Jesse, Claude, Kenneth Patzlaff; sisters: Edna Patzlaff and Florence Bertelson; sisters-in-law: Helen Patzlaff, Katherine Patzlaff, Barbara Patzlaff; and brothers-in-law: Robert Bertelson and Verne Eilts.
