Patrick William Kappenman was born February 4, 1937 in Centerville, SD to Sylvester and Edna (Hook) Kappenman. He grew up and attended school at Centerville, SD, then went on to earn a degree in Civil Engineering from South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. On November, 26, 1959 he married Carole Henriksen of Viborg, SD. They lived in Beresford, SD for five years, then moved to Mitchell, SD in 1965 where they lived for forty-five years. In October 2010 they moved to Bethany Meadows in Brandon, SD.
Patrick worked for the South Dakota Department of Transportation as a bridge, highway, and traffic engineer for thirty-seven years, retiring in 1997. He was dedicated to community service and was active in the Knights of Columbus (Past Grand Knight), Mitchell Exchange Club, Elks Lodge, served on the City Council and other activities too numerous to mention. After retirement, Pat and Carole enjoyed spending their winters in Texas and Arizona.
He is survived by his wife Carole; daughters Cari (Peter) Conden of Avondale, AZ; Gayle (Tom) Meehan of Watertown, SD; son David (Julie) Kappenman of Pinedale, WY; brothers Lawrence (Mary) Kappenman of Los Gatos, CA; Jerry (Eileen) Kappenman of Selah, WA; sister Joan Horstman of Sioux Falls, SD; and five grandchildren, Jack and Joe Backhaus, Sarah Meehan Ortmeier, Megan and Trevor Meehan, and great-granddaughter Alexis Ortmeier.
Patrick was preceded in death by his parents; sister Sally Bertlesen; brother Mark Kappenman, niece, Jill Kappenman, brothers-in-law, Bill Horstman and Charles Gustafson and father-in-law, Henry Henriksen.
