Joyce F. Jordan, 93, died Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Firesteel HealthCare Center, Mitchell, SD. She died of complications from the flu. There will be no funeral services. Arrangements are with the Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell.
Joyce Floreine Parks, the sixth of eleven children of Edwin P. and Ella M. (Elliott) Parks, was born April 20, 1917, at the family homestead in the Bower community in Custer County, SD. She attended Bower Country School through eight grades and high school in Hot Springs and Rapid City, SD. She and her older sister, Hope, graduated from Rapid City High School in 1935.
On June 22, 1937, Joyce married Walter Howard Jordan in Rapid City, SD. In September of 1941, they moved to Los Angeles, California, living there the rest of their married lives.
For the first two years, Joyce worked at the May & Company Department Store. Then they purchased a motel and trailer park in Bell Gardens, which Joyce operated until retiring. Her husband worked for Lockheed, 1941-1947, and Boeing, 1947-1977. They made their retirement home in Bell, CA. Her husband died June 5, 1979.
Joyce’s hobbies included sewing, needlework, playing the organ, singing with the South Gate Songsters, and traveling throughout the United States and Canada, as well as India and Japan.
In July 2006, Joyce moved from Bell, CA, to Mitchell, SD, to be near her niece and husband, Pat and George Breidenbach. At first, she lived at Countryside Living. In July 2008, she moved to Firesteel HealthCare Center where she was recognized as “Resident of the Month” in April 2009.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, nine siblings, an infant son, and her husband. She is survived by one sister, Hope Hart of Portland, OR, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her cremains will be interred in Park Lawn Memorial Park at Commerce, CA.
