Orson Harmon Gray was born November 14, 1928, at home in Iona, SD, to William B. and Hazel (Miller) Gray. He attended first grade in Kramball School. His family moved to Oacoma where he attended school through the 10th grade, then graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1947. He graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1951 with a BA Degree in History. He served in the US Army from 1951 until 1953, serving in the Korean War. He then served in the South Dakota National Guard from 1954 until 1956. He received his Masters Degree from Northern State College in Aberdeen. On June 25, 1958, he married Genevieve Wempe in Gregory, SD. He taught school for twenty-nine years in South Dakota including twenty-five years as a high school principal. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; four children: Martin Gray of Houston, TX, Jerilyn Senska and husband, Neil of Forestburg, Tamara Pickner and husband, Michael of Katy, TX, Edward Gray and wife, Donna of Lane, SD; eight grandsons; two granddaughters; four step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, William “Ling” Gray, two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
