Oscar Carl Scheetz was born in rural Davison County on September 13, 1914 to Carl and Ella (Buhmann) Scheetz. After completing the 8th grade he went to work on his uncle’s farm. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army and after basic training was sent to Calcutta, India where he served as a baker, cook and mess sergeant. He returned to Mitchell in 1946 and on June 11, 1946 he married Florence Schumacher. They made their home in Mitchell where he worked for several restaurants and grocery stores as a cook and baker. He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Florence; four children: James (Sheila) Scheetz of Zeeland, MI, Stephen Scheetz of Yankton, Sandra Scheetz (Craig Starr) of Eugene, OR, and Dori (Jan) Olsen of Sioux Falls; two grandchildren: Joshua Starr of San Diego, CA and Rachel Starr of Eugene, OR; one brother, Art (Shirley) Scheetz of Mitchell; one sister, Evelyn Reinfeld of Halifax, PA; three sisters-in-law, Marcella Scheetz of Tripp; Regina Scheetz and Carrie Badker both of Mitchell and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Edward, Ewald and George and one sister, Cecelia Metzger.
