Obituary

Polly Pas Snow was born October 27, 1946 in Mitchell SD to Charles H. and Dorothy A. (Warnick) Snow.  Polly was born with Down Syndrome at a time when not much was known about the condition.  She has always been a pioneer.  She attended some of the first special education classes at Longfellow Elementary School.  Her parents along with many others were instrumental in the beginning of what was called The Sheltered Workshop, now known as LifeQuest.  She attended “college” at Redfield State Hospital and School from 1962 to 1979.  In 1979, the concept of moving persons from an “institutional” environment out into the community came to fruition and Polly was privileged to be one of the first to move back to her hometown community of Mitchell.

As long as she was able, she enjoyed bowling, parades, playing Bingo, Corn Palace week and watching movies starring Elvis Presley and Ann Margaret.  She had a warm outgoing personality – as long as you were on her good list.  She loved birthdays and Christmas.  Santa Claus was her favorite.

She lived “independently” for several years in a group home arrangement under the loving care and supervision of the staff of LifeQuest, and worked at LifeQuest until she decided to retire in 2009.  That retirement in itself became a new road for Polly and her caretakers and she was a pioneer in how to retire gracefully.  With the onset of Alzheimers came more opportunities for learning.  The living arrangement provided by Radke House has been perfect for Polly and she settled in very comfortably there.  (Our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have provided homes such as Radke House and Blaalid House for these very special people!)

Polly is survived by her sisters:  Ilene Johnson, Pierre, SD and Peggy (Larry, her “brother”) Hofmeister, Sioux Falls, SD; nieces: Marilee (Virgil) Johnson-Geary, Karen (John) Palmer, Kerry (Tom) Bowers, Michelle Phillips and nephew, Michael (Angela) Hofmeister.  She is survived by several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews and her cousins.  She is also survived by the loving, caring, wonderful staff of LifeQuest, God’s angels here on earth and her special “teacher”, Peggy Zech.  She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and her brother-in-law, Doyle Johnson.

Polly was the one that usually saw me in the hallway of LifeQuest almost everyday

I used to work with Polly at LifeQuest- what a joy to see her smile and she gave wonderful hugs, when you were on her good list. What a lovely human being -always remember her pretty dresses and the way her eyes lit up when Santa showed up. Polly truly blessed this world -she will be missed. My deepest sympathies to her family.

My family grew up with Polly. She was a loyal friend and taught us that different wasn't bad, the true meaning of acceptance (she accepted US regardless of OUR faults!), and that all people have value. She was an inspiration to us and didn't even know it. I've thought of her often and will continue to forever. God bless you, Polly.

Peggy, I accidentally deleted your e-mail address and I have sad family news to share. Please respond, Thanks Janet

I only knew Polly for 3 months but in that time I came to care for her very much. She could always make me smile even when having a bad day. I will miss her and her sunny spark. And to Peggy and family I wish to express my deepest sympathy.

I was sorry to see that Polly died. I remembered meeting her with her Mom and Ilene when I was just a child. I'm thinking of all of you at this time.
