Vernon Ray Wipf was born April 13, 1924 to Robert and Ella (Borman) Wipf in Freeman, SD. He graduated from Freeman High School in 1942. In 1943 he enlisted in the US Navy. He served in the South Pacific, on the USS Haggard, and was hit by Kamikaze planes twice.
On February 16, 1946, he married Geraldine Bernier of Antigo, Wisconsin. They lived in Freeman, SD where he worked as the town superintendent for Northwestern Public Service Co for sixteen years. In 1966 he became an instructor at Mitchell Technical Institute, in Mitchell, where he taught in the electrical department for twenty-two years. His wife, Geraldine, of fifty-one years, died in 1996. On October 22, 1999 he married Irene (Weber) Wittstruck at Mitchell. He and Irene became soldiers for the Salvation Army in 2002 and were very active in the Salvation Army Church in Mitchell.
He is survived by his wife, Irene; one daughter, Victoria Cross, Jackson, WY; one son, John Wipf, Mitchell, SD; two grandchildren; one brother, Jim Wipf and wife Joyce, Hurley, SD, five stepchildren: Woody Wittstruck, Mitchell; Susan McDonald, Mitchell; Fred Wittstruck, Mishawaka, IN; Sandra Mills and husband John, Wagner, SD; Tom Wittstruck and wife Carla, Ethan, SD; sixteen step-grandchildren; sixteen step great grandchildren. Vernon was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine, three brothers and one sister and his parents.
