Agnes Houtkooper was born in Stickney, SD on December 8, 1912 to Nicholas and Anna (Ruden) Koch.  She attended Pleasant Lake Country School through the 11th grade when she had to quit school due to polio. During her years in school she excelled in sports.  On January 29, 1935 she married Edward F. Houtkooper at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Stickney. They moved to Hartley, IA where they farmed until moving to Emery, SD in 1947 where they owned and operated an International Farm Equipment Dealership.  In 1948 they moved to Mitchell and they continued farming north of Alexandria until retirement. Ed died July 5, 1976.  Agnes was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, where she was involved with Catholic Daughters and Altar Society. She was past president and life member of the American Legion Auxiliary 40 & 8, the Women of the Moose Lodge, the Elks Lodge and the Mitchell Senior Citizens Center where she regularly played cards.  She was a championship bowler, an avid traveler and enjoyed embroidering beautiful quilts for family.  In 2005 she moved to Yankton to be near her son, Arlin and wife, Carol.

She is survived by three sons: Edwin and wife, Nancy of San Francisco, CA, and their daughter, Heidi (Michael) Temkin and their three children, son, Kurt (Julie) Houtkooper and their two children, Arlin and wife, Carol of Yankton and their son, Russ (Kathy) Reiman and their three children, Wynn and wife, Linda of Tucson, AZ and their son, Max and one sister-in-law, Grace Koch of Stickney and special friend and travel companion, Ida Sebesta of Mitchell.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, five brothers and six sisters.

I am so sorry for your loss. Agnes was a good friend of my Mom's, Mary Ewing. She also lived across the street from my Grandparents, CC Ewing. Aggie and my mom played cards together and enjoyed having fun. When Mom would pick up Aggie as they came to a corner, Aggie would say, "All clear my side!" Aggie put a deck of cards in my mother's casket (Mary Ewing) so they could play bridge together in heaven! That has always brought a smile to my face whenever I think about that. Good work, Aggie! Rest in peace.

many fond memories have come flooding back of the old neighborhood on east 4th where we lived 2 doors from agnes and family. my deepest sympothies to this great family.
