Evelyn Carstens

June 1, 1917 - May 7, 2010

Evelyn Augusta Carstens was born to Julius and Laura (Kraus) Lepke on June 1st, 1917 in Davison County and is the seventh of seven children.  On December 24th, 1939 she married Paul Carstens of rural Mitchell.  She was married to Paul for forty-two years until his death in 1981 at Sarasota, Florida.

She was baptized, confirmed and married at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School. She worked for JJ Newberry, Farm Security Administration, US Soil Conservation Service and others in the Mitchell area.  After the couple’s marriage, Evelyn and Paul moved to Peoria, Illinois for a brief time while Paul worked for the Caterpillar Corp.  They returned to Mitchell where Paul was employed by Rozum Defense Plant and then Automotive Supply Company.  They were then transferred to Huron, SD where Paul opened and managed a new store.  Evelyn was a busy mother and housewife for many years until her children were nurtured to independence.  In 1953 the couple purchased and managed Carstens Oil Co. at the east gate of the State Fairgrounds in Huron, where Evelyn managed the books.  She later worked at the Beadle County Court House for the Board of Equalization.  In August of 1980 Evelyn and Paul retired to Sarasota Florida.  Upon her husband’s death on December 1, 1981, she moved to River Falls, WI where she resided for nine years and then to Columbus, NE until her death.

She is survived by their three children; daughter Vicky (Eugene) Giuliani of Pittsburgh, PA and sons Jerald Carstens of Sarasota, FL. and Dennis (Dorothy) Carstens of Columbus, NE.  She is also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers: Walter Lepke, Vernon (Vera) Lepke, J. Ted (Evelyn) Lepke, and sisters Leona Lepke (Wilfred) Carstens, Ella Lepke (Albert) Drenkow, Esther Lepke (Charles) Hamaker.

With Evelyn’s death, it completes the final chapter of the marvelous family of Laura and Julius Lepke and their seven children. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends.

I am very sad today that I can not be in Mitchell to say good-bye to my Grandma. I am however so very happy that she was surrounded by her 3 children in her passing and that she went so peacefully. We will miss you Grandma.

Whenever I think of Aunt Evie, I think of a beautiful woman who was always wearing a smile and looking like a fashion model!! She was never without her signature red lipstick! One classy woman! I am happy for her today, but my heart is saddened for those she leaves behind, as I know what it feels like to lose one's mother. "Operation Lift-off," as it was referred to in my Bible Study last week, has taken place and we can rejoice with her as she is now reunited with those she loves that have gone before her.
In celebration of her life and the wonderful legacy she has left behind in her children..................Love, Donna
