Mary Jane Arend was born December 17, 1929, in Hardin, MT, to Homer and Margaret (Lyons) Nichols. She moved with her family to Escondido, CA, where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Escondido High School in 1947, and then worked for a furniture and jewelry store. On August 29, 1948, she married Bernard George Arend at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Escondido. They moved to Emery, SD, in May of 1952. In 1972, they moved to Mitchell. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. She was the Adjutant/Treasurer of Unit 7 DAV Auxiliary in Mitchell for many years and was also the State Adjutant/Treasurer of the South Dakota DAV Auxiliary for many years. She was a long time member and secretary of the Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery Association Board.
She is survived by five children: Robert (Nancy) Arend of Garretson, SD, Barbara (Michael) White of Woonsocket, SD, Paul (Debra) Arend of Ankeny, IA, Joseph (Tina) Arend of Sioux Falls, SD, Jon (Denise) Arend of Chandler, AZ; eleven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one sister, Virginia Krysher of Port Richy, FL; one brother, Stanley (Jackie) Nichols of Escondido, CA; three sisters-in-law, Jodi Nichols of Calimesa, CA, Carol (Steve) Richardson of Escondido, CA and Margaret (Roy) Peters of Chula Vista, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard in 1990, one brother, Eddie Nichols and her parents.
