Obituary

Ethel Elizabeth (Krantz) Cassens was born January 25, 1917 near Alcestor, SD, the first child of John and Betty (Wilson) Krantz.  She learned Swedish at home before going to school and learning English.  She graduated from Alcestor High School and from Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls.  She married Cecil Cassens on July 15, 1946 in Luverne, MN.  The couple made their home on the Cassens’ farm east of Forestburg for over fifty years before moving into Mitchell.  To this union was born four children, Helen Marie, Lila Ann, Kenneth Cecil, and Carlton Dwight. Ethel worked for many years as a bookkeeper, first for Johnson Furniture in Mitchell, and later for Parker John Deere Implement in Woonsocket.  She was also active on the farm with gardening and canning food.  She was an avid reader and loved thinking games like scrabble and crossword puzzles. During retirement, Cecil and Ethel enjoyed traveling, visiting relatives in Sweden, Norway, and Wales and making several winter visits to Texas or Arizona.

Ethel is survived by her husband, Cecil of Mitchell, her daughter, Helen (Ben) Zoss of Forestburg, her son, Kenneth (Anne) Cassens of Edgemont, SD, and grandchildren: Laura (Roy) Rutherford of Grafton, ND, Lee Zoss of Atlanta, GA, Scott (Rachel) Cassens of Piedmont, SD, Sheena (Wayne) Douglas of Rapid City, SD, and Danny Cassens of Laramie, WY; and great-grandsons, Ian and Caleb Rutherford and Bradley Cassens.  Other survivors include her sister, Alice Hartsuiker of Lupton, CO and her brother, Donald Krantz of Sioux Falls; many nieces and nephews and a world-wide circle of friends.  She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Lila Ann, son, Carlton and sister, Eleanor Graber.

Dear Family,
My sympathy to you all.....I met Ethel and Cecil about 1992 or 93 at Rochester when they were doctoring there. I am now in the work in Iowa.
With love, Anita Forsberg

We want you to know that our sympathy and thoughts go to all the Cassens family at this time. Ethel was a dear lady and she will be missed but it's good to know that she's finished her course in life and has much to go on to.
