Charles LeRoy Hamaker was born January 27, 1921, in rural Spencer to Clinton and Marie (Mann) Hamaker. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1939. On September 17, 1944, he married Esther Marie Lepke at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. They farmed southeast of Spencer, SD until 1986. After he retired from farming, Charles worked at Golden Living Center at Salem, SD. He and Esther then moved to Wesley Acres Retirement Complex in Mitchell, where they served as assistant managers for five years. He worked for County Fair Food Market in Mitchell for over twenty years. He was currently a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell.

While in Spencer, Charles was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served many years on the Spencer School Board.

He is survived by five children: Sharon Rehorst of Mitchell, Beverly (Randy) Hummel of Minneapolis, MN, Doug (Judy) Hamaker of Mitchell, Rebecca (Les) Hanson of  Eagan, MN and Delvin Hamaker of Minneapolis, MN. Also mourning his death are ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Carstens of Columbus, NE; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife Esther in April of 2007; his parents; one brother Clarence; four sisters: Cecile Briggs, Mildred Bohlin, Hazel Hinkel, Marjorie Assmus, and one son-in-law, Paul Rehorst.

Sharon, Bev, Doug, Becky & Delvin - My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. I have such fond memories of Uncle Charles and the time we spent with him, Aunt Esther and all of you as we were growing up. He had such spunk and a love for life! I wish we could be there to help you celebrate his wonderful life. But, please know I am with you in spirit.
