Obituary

Kathryn Pauline (Schmitz) Oster, was born June 27, 1935 to John and Helen (Moran) Schmitz in Mitchell, SD.  She graduated from Notre Dame High School in Mitchell and Presentation College in Aberdeen in 1954 with a teaching certificate.  Kay married John Oster on August 23, 1958 in Mitchell.  She worked as a teacher before her marriage and for a few years after.  Kay then made the decision to stay at home to raise her family.  Later, she worked for RSVP, and for many years at the Prehistoric Indian Village in Mitchell.  She belonged to the Lunch Bunch, the Red Hat Ladies, 500 Club, Bridge Club, Holy Trinity Altar Society, the Ethan American Legion Auxiliary, lifelong and active member of the Democratic Party and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Kay was an avid sports fan and loved more than anything watching her children and then grandchildren participate in athletic and fine art activities.  She truly enjoyed going out to eat with her lady friends, playing cards, watching old movies and dancing with her husband, John.  Kay had a deep faith in our Lord and will be missed by her family and friends very much.

Grateful to have shared in Kay’s life are her children:  Tom (Lori) of Pierre; Peggy (Doug) Cox of Aberdeen; Susie (Cory) Kelleher of Minneapolis, MN; Michael (Jo) of Rapid City; her grandchildren:  Tiffany Oster, Matt Oster, Adam Oster, Christian Cox, Dalton Cox, Colton Cox, Keara Kelleher, Gavin Kelleher, Finley Kelleher, Derek Oster, Nicolette Oster, Caitlin Oster, and Jordan Oster; a brother, Terry Schmitz of Aberdeen and a brother-in-law, Harry Hilton of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John in 1996, her son, Pat in 1979, her infant daughter, Mary in 1961, her sister, Mary Jane Hilton, and her brother, Tommy Schmitz.

My Grandma was the Bomb Diggity she was the best and loved her KFC and maybe after a tub of dairy queen vanilla ice cream! She loved everyone and always had a kind word and was loved by everyone and she will be missed! I believe with all my heart that she made it strait to heaven and spent her Purgitory here on Earth with all of her suffering but i love her and miss her and ask her to pray for me!! <3
P.S. This was a blessing she is goign to see the face of God and she is not suffering

I have many good memories of Kay during my high school years. Along with being a good friend to my Mom, she used to substitute teach and always had a funny story to share. Your family is in my prayers.

I taught in Avon for 7 years and took tickets at many sporting events in which Kay attended, cheering on her grandchildren. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
God Bless.

Kay will be missed very much by family and friends but I look at it a little different because now my mom will have her friend and best buddy up in heaven with her! I remember Kay always being the life of the party and most recently always making sure she gave my dad a hug or acknowledgment in daily or weekly mass. Susie please let me know if I can do anything for you and your family. The Gossman family's thoughts and prayers are with you.

I sent a card to Bittners but in case you don't get it, please accept my sympathy on the loss of a wonderful lady. Kay was very special to all of us classmates. I especially enjoyed our days in the Black Hills together after our 50th. Always fun with a beautiful spirit in spite of her health problems!

My dear Aunt Kay will be missed so much by us all! Kay had a way to make you feel like you were the most important person in the room, always made me feel like a million bucks..I remember and will cherish all of the great memories from times visiting the farm to the holiday get togethers in Mitchell. I'm sorry I won't be around to say good by, but know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers!! God bless!

Kay will be missed very much. She was such a fun and upbeat person. I enjoyed the times I got lucky enought to join the "Lunch Bunch" with my mom on a Friday when Kay was there and the times she stopped at my mom's house to visit.
My prayers are with the family

Sylvia and I will miss Kay very much. She was always so much fun to be with when we would vacation in Mitchell. She was so generous to our Notre Dame highschool class when we had our 50th reunion in 2003 by opening her house for an evening of food, drink, and conversation.

Kay is my Godmother and I will miss her dearly. Kay made it a point to let you know that you were special to her and I will remember all the great times that we had together. I wish I could hear her say "awesome" or "you got that right!" just one more time. I love you Kay!
