Kathleen M. Baker was born October 5, 1949 at Mitchell, SD to Edward and Luella (Weber) Young. She grew up at Mount Vernon where she attended school and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1967. She attended Dakota Wesleyan University and Northern State College where she graduated with a degree in teaching. On August 11, 1972 she married Dean Baker. She was active in all aspects of the family farm which Dean and she purchased in 1980. She was employed by the Mount Vernon School system for thirty plus years, was a substitute mail carrier for the US Post Office, she was the director of the Mount Vernon After School Program and was a blood drive coordinator for United Blood Services. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the Mount Vernon Alumni and the Mount Vernon American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband Dean Baker; her four children: Ryan Baker and wife, Rhonda of Mount Vernon, SD, Carisa Giblin and husband, Eric of Mount Vernon, SD, Aaron Baker of Mount Vernon, SD, Jesse Baker and wife, Angie of Kimball, SD; six grandchildren: Thomas, Maria, and Tanner Baker, Brynn Giblin, Luke Baker, Autumn Baker and was expecting a grandchild in June; one sister, Linda McMahan and husband, Tom of Buena Vista, CO and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Paul and Tom Young.
