Obituary:

Elmer Haugum, 89, Mitchell, died Sunday, December 2, 2007 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 5, 2007, 10:30 AM at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Burial will be in the Ebeneezer Lutheran Cemetery in rural Corsica. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the Bittner Funeral Chapel.

 

 

Henry Elmer Haugum was born March 21, 1918, in Red Wing, MN, to Henry Enoch and Marie (Sunde) Haugum. He started grade school in Mount Vernon and attended country schools in Aurora and Douglas County. He graduated from High School in Chicago and graduated from Coyne Electrical and Radio School in 1937.  He continued his education at Northwestern University in Chicago then Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell. He served in the US Army in the Asiatic Pacific during World War II as a Radio Technician. He returned to Chicago and worked in the Electrical and Accounting fields for a number of years. He graduated from the Crane Technical School in Chicago in 1950. He moved back to the family farm in Douglas County where he farmed with his father. He retired then moved to Mitchell to live with his mother and sister. He was a  member of the Stickney American Legion and was an avid reader, artist, organ player, ham radio operator and studied several languages.

 

He was preceded in death by his sister Frances Haugum and his parents.
