Verlyn Henry Godber


June 18, 1927 - February 19, 2009



Verlyn Henry Godber was born June 18, 1927 near Letcher, SD to Clarence and Viola (Koepke) Godber.  He grew up and attended school at Letcher and graduated from high school in 1946.  In 1951 he joined the US Army and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War.  After being discharged in May 1953 he returned to the Letcher area where he was involved in farming.  On June 12, 1965 he married LaVay Johnson Couch at the Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. In 1986 he retired and moved into Letcher.  He was a member of the Letcher Community Church, the American Legion Post #93, the DAV and the Senior Citizens.

      He is survived by his wife, LaVay; one son, Joel Godber and wife, Linda of Panama City, FL; two daughters: Debra Finklea and husband, Alton of Latta, SC, Teresa Woods and husband, Robert of Casselberry, FL; five grandchildren; one sister, Clarice Nutter of Mitchell, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

      He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Norma Hadden and a granddaughter, Leah Godber.

Verlyn was a good friend of me and my family and it was sad to see him go. I will always remember him and the good times we spent with him. Rest in Pease Verlyn
