Elwood August Wittenhagen was born September 19, 1918, at Ethan, SD, to Otto and Nancy (Motley) Wittenhagen. He grew up and attended school at Ethan. On October 23, 1946, he married Adeline Thiry at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. He was a truck driver for many years and retired from Time D.C. Trucking in 1978.
He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Moose Lodge #875, the American Legion Post #18 and the Mitchell Trap Club. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapshooter and won numerous trapshooting awards.
He is survived by his son, Robert of Carlisle, OH; and four sisters, Ruth McLaury and husband Jack of Mitchell, SD, Bernice Sowards and husband, Pride of Springfield, OH, Devona Murphy and husband, Herb of Ezel, KY and Betty Sambo of Kansas City, MO; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Adeline; two sons, Ronald and Richard; his parents and eight brothers.
