Obituary

Clifford LaVern Roth was born to Art & Mary Roth on April 2, 1949 in Stickney SD.  He went home to be with Jesus on Aug 15, 2018.  He led a full life and will be missed by many.

Cliff & Nancy Hembd were married in beautiful Stone Park on May 16, 1981, and raised two children in Sioux City and then outside of Des Moines, Iowa.  Callie was born in 1982, and Kyle followed in 1985.  Cliff’s first love was for his children; he was very proud of them.

Cliff graduated from Stickney High School in 1967 and attended SD State College in Springfield.  He moved to Sioux City in 1973.  Most of his time was spent working in the Sioux City Schools, Gordon Chemical and Chas Zook Dodge.  He graduated with a BA from USD in Vermillion in 1988.  In December 1999 the Roth family moved to Johnston, IA, where Cliff worked for the Urbandale School District until health issues led to retirement in 2012.  He and Nancy moved to spend their subsequent years in sunny Arizona in the community of Solera in San Tan Valley.

Cliff’s second love was shooting, and he felt he couldn’t have too many guns.  Though once an avid hunter, he spent the last several years shooting sporting clays at Rio Salado Shooting Range regularly with friends, where he earned the nickname ‘Dead-eye’.  He was on a men’s Bocce league during the winters at Solera, and loved playing card games for hours.  Friends especially loved his dry wit and impish smile, and he relished in cracking jokes.  He had a great sense of humor!

Cliff leaves behind his wife Nancy, daughter Callie, two sisters and their families, Janet (Rob) Bosworth of Plankinton and Linda (Greg) Weber of Parkston.   He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Richard Hoffman, and his son, Kyle.  Kyle’s death in 2006 particularly struck Cliff, and he never fully recovered from the loss.  His wife Nancy and daughter Callie were by his side when he died at Desert Banner Hospital in Mesa, AZ.  His son was waiting for him in heaven.  Callie will return to her current home in southern California until carrying the memories of her father onto her next locale.  Cliff was thankful for the many friends he had made along his journey, and he has a precious community of loved-ones who will grieve his departure.

His cats Sampson and Chopsticks also already miss him terribly.

A Memorial Service will be at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell, SD at 6:30 pm on Friday, August 24 with a visitation from 5-7:00 pm.  Burial will be in Silver Ridge Cemetery in Stickney the following day.  His ashes will lie next to his son and close to many family members.

Our deepest sympathy to you and Callie at this very difficult and sad time. We didn’t spend a lot of time together but enjoyed every minute we did. Those card games were very special times. Will never forget how Cliff loved to over bid you! Our prayers are with you.

Impish smile, indeed! Loved his wit and dry humor! I will forever think of Cliff every time I see Gummie Bears, remembering how he got my Gummie Bears in our White Elephant Christmas gift exchange. God’s Speed on Angels Wings, dear Cliff.

We will miss Cliff's humor, his smile, his jokes. Although we didn't know him over a lifetime, we enjoyed home at our Somers home, and our Iowa connection
Our sympathy to Callie and Nancy

So sorry to hear of Cliff's passing.I know he will be greatly missed. We will be unable to attend the service as Ruth just had a knee replacement a couple of weeks ago. We are so sorry we won't be able to be there. We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.
