Obituary

Dorothea Estella Wickett was born November 7, 1911 at Mitchell, SD to Richard W. and Grace (Stockton) Wickett.  She grew up north of Mitchell where she attended Plano School, graduating in 1929.  She then graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University earning a teaching degree.  She taught school for 25 years, teaching in Plano, Wakonda, Dell Rapids and Sioux Falls. She was employed by Social Services of South Dakota, serving the counties of Lincoln, McCook and Davison for 25 years. For several years she worked at Mitchell Retirement Home.  She was a volunteer at the Methodist Hospital, Dakota Discovery Museum and the public and Christian schools.  She was a member of the Harvest Community Church of the Nazarene where she served on the church board, was involved as Sunday School Superintendent and teaching Sunday school. She was awarded the Sunday School Teacher of the year for the South Dakota District and was given the Distinguished Service Award by the Mitchell church and was awarded the Community Better Life Award through the Mitchell Retirement Home.  

 

She is survived by one sister, Lois Dwyer and husband, Merle of Wakonda, SD and three nieces, Pam Burnett and husband, Dick of Toledo, OH, Jane Haltness and husband, Ed of Valdez, AK, Candyce Peitz and husband, Dave of Wakefield, NE; and two nephews, Richard Dwyer and wife, Dorothy of Harrisburg, SD and Paul Dwyer and wife, Cyndi of Elmwood, NE and numerous great nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Paul and John.

 

Memorials are preferred and are to be directed to the Crippled Children’s School in Sioux Falls.
