Obituary

John M. Patton passed in peace June 26, 2018, at the age of 74.  Known as “Grandpa Grumbles” and “Grand poppy” by his grandchildren, and JP Quigley to his friends.  He was always gruff but a true teddy bear once you got to know him.

A celebration of John's life will be 5-8:00 PM Friday, August 17, 2018 at the Depot in Mitchell.

He had a variety of occupations over the years.  He was a banker, stay-at-home father, owner of Access Inc. a computer company and a Master Engine Technician.  He loved being able to fix things and taught many others to do the same.  He will be missed for his ability to problem-solve his daughters’ car troubles through just a phone call.

John loved anything fast and was an avid drag racer, sailboat enthusiast, and snowmobile and motorcycle rider.  He also traveled throughout his life.  Some of his favorite places to visit included Gavins Point Marina, where we spent many weekends as a family racing sailboats; the Salt Flats in Utah where he helped build the “World’s Fastest Bagger”; camping in Canada as a family and Glacier National Park.  His love of speed transferred to family road trips, with most of our “vacation/scenery” pictures reflecting the glare of the window, as we were making “good time”.

He also enjoyed the finer things in life, such as Waffle Houses, Salted Nut Rolls, Pecan Pie and Krispy Kreme doughnuts.  He was an amazing cook and found a hobby in smoking food.  His BBQ ribs were to die for!  He prided himself on not eating “anything green” and won over his granddaughter by sharing his Peanut Butter Crunch.

John was loved by many and will be missed by those who knew him.  Although he did not want a memorial service, his life will be remembered and celebrated in the near future with his family and friends in Mitchell, SD.

John is survived by his daughter, Angie and Selassie Amana of Greensboro, NC,  granddaughter Aurelia and grandson Kellan; step-son, John A. Patton of Brandon, step-daughter, Stacey and Dan Pederson of Asheville, NC, step-granddaughter Braelyn, his sisters Helen Ann Patton of Silver Spring, MD and Mary Fishencord of Phoenix, AZ, two nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law Ed Fishencord and step-grandson Kailer Pederson.
