Doris Bowar was born to Arthur and Bertha (Weber) Bowar on April 19, 1935 and was raised on a farm near Dimock, SD with seven sisters and one brother. After high school graduation from Parkston, she worked in Mitchell at First National Bank.

While living and working in Mitchell, she met the love of her life, Glen Jaton. They were united in marriage on January 3, 1959 and proceeded to build their life together on a farm west of Ethan. The 1960s were filled with productive years for them as they were blessed with five sons and two daughters over a nine year stretch. Doris was always busy on their dairy farm cooking, doing laundry, raising chickens, and caring for a large garden for the growing family. Doris was also active in her community with PTA and their church as she taught CCD and was a member of the Altar Society. She was her children’s biggest fan attending all games and performances over the years. After raising their children, Glen and Doris enjoyed more time for fun. This included more travel to visit family and to attend Glen’s Navy reunions. At this time they purchased a camper and began to go camping with their kids and grandkids. There were many wonderful memories created on these camping adventures for adults and kids alike.

After losing Glen to cancer in 2006, Doris moved to Mitchell. She enjoyed spending time there with her sisters and was active in card groups and her new church, the Holy Family Catholic Church. She enjoyed years of volunteer service at Queen at Peace hospital. Doris loved reading and continued to be a big Twins baseball fan. She loved to attend her many grandchildren’s games and performances too.

Grateful for the blessing of Doris’s life are her seven children: Nancy (Dean) Pierson of Brandon, Jeff Jaton of Mitchell, Dean (Jodie) Jaton of Dell Rapids, Brenda (Jay) Hieb of Bloomington, IL, and Kevin (Lori) Jaton, Doug (Kathy) Jaton, and Jim (Lisa) Jaton, all of Sioux Falls. Doris would confirm that, of all the names she had in her life, her favorite was “Gramma” — she had 22 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by three sisters: Adele Boddicker and Bert Schoenfelder of Parkston and Rosemary Locken of Mitchell. Remaining in-laws include Carol Paulsen of Casper, WY, Vera & Bill Hanna of Sioux City, Wayne Jaton of Victorville, CA, and Arden Harvison of Platte. Doris was also blessed with many nieces and nephews from both sides of her extended family.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband Glen, four sisters, Bobbie, Betty, Arlene, Rita, and one brother, Larry.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer Society, American Cancer Society, or Avera Dougherty Hospice House.
