Obituary

Vernon Jacobs, 85 of Mitchell died, Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell.  Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell.  Burial will be in Silver Ridge Cemetery in Stickney.  Visitation will be Monday from 5-7:00 PM at the Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Vernon Dale Jacobs was born July 31, 1932 to John and Lena (Hemeyer) in Parkston SD. He grew up in Stickney and graduated from Stickney High School. After high school Vernon joined the Marines and served in the Korean War.

Vernon married Dorothy (Burns) and they had three children. After Dorothy's death Vernon married Connie (Moore) and they had two children.

Vernon was the local carpenter for over 40 years in the Stickney area. He also farmed for 18 years near Stickney raising livestock and growing crops. After moving to Mitchell in 1990 he continued doing maintenance work for an apartment complex until 2004 when he retired.

He enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing cards, gardening, and watching baseball. He was a lifetime member of the Stickney Legion and the Plankinton VFW. He loved spending time with family and friends and will be remembered for his storytelling and sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife Connie, Mitchell; children: Dale (Sue) Jacobs, Sioux Falls; Ronda (John) Vetch, Mitchell; Terry (Anne) Jacobs, Yankton; Tammy (Bill) Beintema, Sioux Falls; and Mike (Hope) Jacobs, Sioux Falls; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren; one brother, Howard (Vivian), Spearfish; three sisters Joyce Larson, Mitchell; Bernice Borman, Stickney; and Joan Juntunen, Plankinton; and a sister-in-law, Lonnie Burns, Mitchell; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy, brother Ron Jacobs, sisters-in-law Marcia Jacobs, Donna Messer, Shirley Bruseth, brothers-in-law Bud Larson, Don Borman, Eldon Juntunen, Bob Messer, Cliff Burns, and Bob Bruseth.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Mitchell Heart and Sole Cancer Walk and Run.

I served in Korea with Vernon (we called him Jake when we served in Korea) He was the best man in our gun section and I was proud to have served with him. I was proud to call him friend. He was as good a man as I could ever hope to meet.

Connie and family you have our sympathy and prayers. We had many memories at the Hemeyer picnics. Vernon and Larry talked a lot at then. We are sorry for your loss. I'm not sure if we will make it for the funeral. I hope we can.

I remember as a kid how we always can and got gallons of milk from your farm and all the cats you had and of your mom doing my moms hair those were some good years - I will keep your family in my prayers as you go through this difficult time

I am so sorry to hear that Stub passed away. It certainly made the time that I visited with him at Steve’s Celebration of Life service extra special!! I will certainly be keeping you all close in my heart ❤️AND in my prayers as well.
