Viola Marie Jenks, 99, of Mitchell, died Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Monday, February 26 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Dimock. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Sunday with a scripture service at 7:00 pm at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Viola Mary Jenks was born October 8, 1918 on the family farm near Dimock to Peter and Lena (Hohn) Koster. She attended country school and Dimock Catholic School through the 8th grade. Prior to being married Viola worked at Mitchell Produce with her sister Florence and some cousins. She also enjoyed attending dances at Ruskin Park with her sister and cousins and then with Willard after their marriage. It was at a dance at the Mitchell Corn Palace that she met Willard Albert Jenks. Willard and Viola were united in marriage on April 16, 1945 at Dimock, SD. To this marriage were born two children, Jean and Allen. After living one year with Willard’s folks they purchased their farm southwest of Mitchell. Viola continued to live on the farm after Willard’s death in 1999 up until 3 days prior to her death. While on the farm Viola was Willard’s helper. She also tended to her large garden, flower beds and apple trees all of which she loved. Willard and Viola loved to dance, especially polkas, and attended dances at Pineview and the Moose. They also square danced in their early marriage. Viola kept her days busy canning, quilting and was always there to help care for her grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook. In her farming days, during silage cutting, the crew always looked forward to her lunches which included the best desserts. Her family always looked forward to her stuffing at Thanksgiving. It was the best! In her later years Viola discovered gambling at the Casinos. She loved the socialization and her “gambling family” and occasionally she brought home a buck or two. She was always the first to provide a helping hand, make a meal, bake a cake or provide a ride for her “younger friends”.

She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Jean (Robert) Wuertzer of Parkston, son, Allen (Norma) Jenks of Mitchell, grandchildren: April Jenks of Huron, Emily (Jason) Kinsella of Mitchell, Cody Jenks of Mitchell, Tanner Jenks of Brookings, Richard Wuertzer of Mitchell, Royce (Jessica) Wuertzer of Rapid City, Russell Wuertzer of Saudi Arabia, great grandchildren: Dakota and River Kinsella whom she referred to as “Brown Eyes” and “Red” and they knew her as “Grandma Olie” and Halie and Tucker Wuertzer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard, brothers: Clarence, Urban, and Herb, sister, Florence Nelson and step-sister, Mary Polreis.

Viola and became friends riding on Lou and Judy Tour bus riding to Flandreau. She always would have stories to tell, while we ate Joe's Ginger Snap cookies.
