Obituary

Mark Edward Vaughan, 69, Mitchell, SD died Monday, January 8, 2018 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Friday, January 12 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial with Military Honors will be in Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Thursday with a prayer service at 7:00 pm at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Mark Edward Vaughan was born March 24, 1948 in Detroit, MI. He graduated from Hazel Park High School and attended Auto Tech School. In 1968 he joined the US Air Force and was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base and there he met the love of his life, Mary Hawkins. On September 5, 1968 they married in Rapid City. Mark joined the South Dakota Highway Patrol and had a long and prosperous career with the SDHP and Davison County Sheriff’s Department. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Jesus needed another fisherman to feed the multitudes, so He called Mark home. Mark was a kind and generous person and will be deeply missed by all whom loved him.

He is survived by his wife Mary of almost 50 years, three sons: Brad (Kim) Vaughan of Indianapolis, IN, Marks S. Vaughan and Jason T. (Kristi) Vaughan of Mitchell, 10 grandchildren, the apples of his eye, one future great-grandson and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and uncle Jimmy.

Mark was a joy to work with when I was a dispatcher for the Mitchell Police Department. He always had a smile and a joke for me and made me laugh countless times. My thoughts and prayers to the family.

Prayers to all of you. Mark (HP-74) was an awesome man to work with when I worked at the Mitchell Police Dept. He remained a friend after both of our lives turned to different careers. He will be missed by many. May you rest in peace.

I always knew I had a great backup when HP74 was on patrol when I was 8-1C for the Davison County Sheriff's Office. I always looked forward to the 10-10 2800 at midnight. Translation....it was a great pleasure to work with Mark in law enforcement and was always someone I respected. RIP Mark!

I worked with Mark while I was stationed in the Mitchell squad while I was in the Highway Patrol. He had a great way of mentoring the new Troopers and was always ready to help if you needed it with a smile. RIP Mark, you will be greatly missed!

Mark was there when I started with the Highway Patrol. A lot of good memories. It was nice having him as a neighbor for the last 10 years. Rest in Peace Buddy. Condolences to Mary and the boys.

My thoughts and prayers to Marks family, knew him well as a Trooper. He will be missed that's for sure. I was able to spend a lot of time with him and he taught me a lot. Thank you Mark your a dear friend.

My sympathies to the family. Mark was a heck of a nice guy, I always appreciated he's love for antiques and was always happy when he came across a cribbage board for my collection. Prayers are with his wife during this difficult time.
