Obituary

Gene Knigge, 85, White Lake, SD died Sunday, December 31, 2017 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 6, at the United Methodist Church in White Lake. Burial will be in the White Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 – 2:00 pm on Saturday at the church.  Arrangements are with the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Gene Francis Knigge was born November 18, 1932 in Plankinton to Carl and Esther (Bannick) Knigge. He attended Patton Country School and graduated from Wessington Springs High School. He served the US Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. Following the service Gene worked as a farm hand. On November 20, 1959 he married Marge Wait at the Methodist Church in Wessington Springs. They had two daughters together, Robin and Renee. Together they worked for the Warren and Paul Breeding Farms and Carlson Construction, building the interstate at Elk Point, Rapid City and Brush, CO. He worked for Orville Haines for a brief time and then in 1964 began farming on their own south of White Lake until 1977. He managed the Azdak hog confinement farm for several years and then was employed by the Aurora County Highway Department until retiring. Due to a fall, he moved to the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in 2016. Gene loved working on the farm and being around animals. He always had a horse for Renee and Robin, that they could call their own. He enjoyed playing cards, reading western books, babysitting and taking his grandson, Blake fishing and baking at the home. He was a member of the White Lake American Legion and the United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two his two daughters: Robin Knigge and Renee (Ed) Peters, grandson, Blake Peters all of White Lake, four sisters: Laverne Berg of Texas, Betty Elias of Rapid City, Ruby Parmely of Miller, Lois Wolf of Parkston and one brother, Dennis (Marcie) Knigge of Iowa.

He was preceded in death by five siblings: Peggy Johnson, Hillis Knigge, Krola Hauge, Emery Knigge and Kay Younie.

Robin and Renee, Thinking of you both and your family today. Sorry for your loss, I know Gene liked to play cards and when he lived in the apartments, we often saw him when he went for walks in town.
