Charles Strock Johnson Jr. was born April 4, 1925 at Mitchell to Charles and Hannah (Houston) Johnson. He grew up and attended schools in Mitchell. He entered the US Navy in 1942. During World War II he served in the Western Pacific on the submarines: USS Poge, USS Proteus, USS Irex and USS Puffer until his discharge in 1947. On April 12, 1946, he married Ruth Kowalski at Bridgeport, CT. They moved to Mitchell in 1949 where he served as Davison County Deputy Sheriff. For many years he was the Davison County Director of Equalization. They lived in Madison, SD from 1965 until 1973 where he was the Executive Director of the Madison Chamber of Commerce. He was later employed at the Super 8 Motel. He was a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church, American Legion and the South Dakota Submarine Veterans of World War II. He had been a member of the VFW and Kiwanis Clubs of Madison and Mitchell.
Survivors include his wife Ruth; three sons: Charles Johnson III , Missoula, MT, Donald Johnson and wife, Gail, Fairview, NC, Thomas Johnson and wife, Bonnie, Henderson, NV; two daughters: Kathleen Ernst and husband, Craig, Aberdeen, SD, Mary Prascher and husband, Daniel, Grapevine, TX; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; his daughter-in-law, Angela Johnson, Long Island, NY; two sisters, Mary Ann Peck, Huron, SD and Hannah Hessler, Vacaville, CA. He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Johnson, one sister, Lelia Reger and his parents.
