Dorothy, the oldest of four children was born on Feb 2, 1931 to John and Alice (Martens) Reiners.   She was born on the family homestead in Jerauld County in Rural Wessington Springs, SD.  She attended country school through the 8th grade, and graduated high school in Wessington Springs at the age of 17. She obtained her teaching certificate from the Wessington Springs College. Dorothy loved teaching and taught at several country schools.

She was married to Paul W. Patton on May 13, 1949.  Shortly after they married, Paul joined the army and was transferred to Germany.  Dorothy traveled by ship to spend time with her husband where she lived with a host family.  Upon her return, she was excited for the opportunity to travel home on the Queen Elizabeth.

Upon returning to the U.S. Paul and Dorothy settled in Wessington Springs and in 1956 they moved to Seattle where they continued to run a service station.  In 1959 they felt called back to the Midwest and moved to Mitchell where they ran a salvage yard on the west side of Mitchell.

Dorothy had a strong faith in her Lord and Savior while attending the Mitchell Wesleyan Church. She was active in the community serving as a leader in the Davison County 4-H, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts. She drove school bus for the city of Mitchell and enjoyed getting to know each child.  She served as book keeper beside her husband in the Pat’s Champlin service station, Patton’s Used Cars and Parts salvage yard, and Patton Enterprises trucking business, as well as a apartment complex.

In 1962 they moved to a home on west 4th street and lived there for only 10 days when a tornado took their home.   Dorothy was home alone with 5 children. She gives God all the glory for saving her family. They rebuilt their home on the same property. In 1994 they relocated their home to rural Hanson Co were she enjoyed the view overlooking the James River. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, canning, and traveling to see the many activities that her grandchildren were involved in.

She is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years Paul W. Patton, children; Deb(Greg) Buche Wesley (Tammy) Patton, Grand Prairie, TX, Greg (Janine) Patton, Paul B.(Dawn) Patton; and Barb (Brian) Stork, all of Mitchell, SD.  Twenty-three grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren; Siblings Marvin (Betty), Reiners, Blackhawk SD, Clifford Reiners, Kallispell, MT; Sister; Darlene Pfingston, Rapid City, SD; Brothers-in-law: Arlo Tiede, McPherson, KS and Lester Patton, Kenmore, WA; Sister-in-law Eloise Patton, Hemit, CA; and numerous Nieces and Nephews.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter Paula Patton; parents; two grandsons: Travis Stork and Zachary Buche, and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Davison County 4-H Memorial fund.
