Duane Arthur Nebelsick was born on February 6, 1927 in rural Hanson County to Louis and Habie (Heronimus) Nebelsick. He attended school in Farmer and graduated with the class of 1945. After graduation, Duane farmed with his dad. On December 25, 1947 he married Marjorie Buehler and they moved to their own farm a mile to the north.
An avid sports fan, Duane played high school basketball and participated in track. He played on church league softball teams in both Emery and Mitchell for many years playing with his brother, Earl, and later his sons. He also bowled on numerous teams over the years. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports and was able to attend a couple of Major league baseball games last month watching his beloved St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks.
A lifelong member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Emery, Duane served as a Deacon and Elder. He sang with the church choir and was a member of the men’s quartet. Duane also spent many years on the school boards for the Edgerton Consolidated School District and Hanson Independent #40. As President, he was able to present graduating diplomas to some of his own children.
Duane farmed, raised livestock, ran a dairy, and did custom work, at one point owning and operating the community threshing machine. He also was a trucker, one of the first licensed commercial operators in Hanson County. After retiring and moving to Alexandria, Duane continued running his trucking operation, worked as a crop adjuster, and helped his sons with their farming operations. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting deer, pheasant, and rabbits as well as fishing. His children remember softball games in the pasture during the summer and basketball games in the hay loft during the winter.
