Gerald Charles Degen, 83, of Mitchell, formerly of Fulton, died Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in the American Legion Cemetery, Mitchell. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 5, 2017 from 5-7:00 PM at the church with a 7:00 PM Scripture Service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Gerald Charles Degen was born February 23, 1934 to Theodore and Frances (Weber) Degen on the home place near Parkston, SD. He attended country school through the 8th grade. He worked for local dairy farms and neighboring farms until he joined the United States Army in 1954 and was stationed in Kentucky and Germany during the Korean War. In 1956 he was honorably discharged and returned home and began working at Armours Creamery. He married Dorothy Suhr on February 19, 1957 at Dimock. In 1958 he began farming and working at Myers Body Shop and Mitchell Machinery. He farmed for 39 years and retired at age 56. He enjoyed playing cards and camping. Gerald was a member of the American Legion, Moose Lodge and Holy Family Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one son, Douglas (Diane) Degen of Mitchell; one daughter, Cynthia Behrens of Dell Rapids, SD, six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers: Charles (Sandy), Alexandria, SD and Leroy (Dottie) Mitchell; two sisters: Charlotte (Arland) Lindsley of Piedmont, SD, Ielene Thackeray of Zephyrhills, FL and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Melvin, Theodore and Arnold.
