Obituary

Kenneth Dwayne Heppler was a good and faithful servant.  He was confirmed on May 11, 1947 at Holy Trinity Church in Volga SD.  In 1967 he along with Carmen led sixteen youth to the International Luther League Convention in Seattle WA.  Kenny was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church.  Over the years he was involved in several community organizations including the Exchange Club, Elk’s Club, Moose Lodge and the Senior Citizen’s Center.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Carmen (Holter) and his children: Jeffrey (Deanna) Heppler of Mitchell, Roxanne (Curt) Volk of Boise, ID, Danny Heppler of Mitchell, Michael (Heidi) Heppler of Sioux Falls; 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; one brother:  Glenn (Audrey) Heppler of Volga and one sister:  Delores (Halvor) Nelson of St. Paul MN.

Kenny was born in Arlington SD in 1931.  He was the second of five children born to George and Grace (Franken) Heppler who farmed between Brookings and Volga.  He attended country schools through the 8th grade and graduated from SDSC Ag School in 1953.  In 1954 he married Carmen Holter.  The Hepplers would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary next month.

After graduating from Ag School he managed the college farm by Brookings.  Shortly after marriage he was drafted into the Army and served two years.  Later he would be in the Army National Guard and Reserves.  After active duty service Kenny earned a BS degree in Agriculture at SDSC graduating in 1960.  After graduation he started working as a county extension agent for Deuel County and they lived in Clear Lake SD.  In 1961 Kenny was called to serve during the Berlin Crisis and his wife and two small children moved to Colorado Springs CO.

After a year the family moved to Parker SD and Kenny worked as assistant county extension agent for Turner County.  Soon he took a job managing American Cyanamid Farm Supply.  One child was added to the family during their time in Parker.

In 1968 Kenny was promoted to Territory Manager for American Cyanamid and managed forty plant locations.  The family moved to Spencer IA and another child was added to the family.  The family moved to Mitchell SD in 1974.  In 1976 he, with the help of the entire family, built the house where they currently still live.  Kenny worked for Golden Sun Feeds as a Territory Manager until 1979 when he became self-employed working as James Valley Ag Service until he retired in 1994.  Throughout his career he earned several sales awards but his family was most important to him.  Camping, reunions and holidays were big events where he cherished time with his kids and extended family.

After retirement Kenny volunteered his time at Queen of Peace Hospital for eight years.  He drove the Disabled American Veterans van accumulating over 1300 hours.  He also volunteered at the Corn Palace helping with crowd control for basketball games and polka fest events.  Kenny enjoyed Mitchell Kernel and Dakota Wesleyan basketball games.  He was a big race fan and enjoyed spending time with sons, grandchildren and friends at the track.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Merlin and his sister, Marlys Harrington.
