Obituary

 

Arnold Peter Dagen was born October 1, 1932, in Parkston, SD, to Theodore and Frances (Weber) Dagen. He attended school in rural Alexandria, SD. He worked for Hanson County for two years.  In 1957, he started his career in the service station business owning and operating three businesses in Mitchell, the last one being Arnie’s Service on East First Street until his retirement. On August 23, 1955, he was united in marriage to Verna Larson in Mitchell. To this union two children were born. Arnie was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.  He was an avid collector of gas station memorabilia and enjoyed showing it off whenever possible.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Verna; son, Paul (Becky) Dagen and daughter, Linnea (Craig) Fuerst  of Mitchell; five grandchildren: Benjamin (Jessica) Fuerst of Mitchell, Sarah Fuerst of Yankton, Travis (Chelsea) Dagen, Zach Dagen and Alex Dagen of Mitchell; two great grandchildren, Kaylie and Kaleb Fuerst of Mitchell; five brothers and sisters: Ilene Thackeray of Florida, Gerald (Dorothy) Degen and LeRoy (Dottie) Degen all of Mitchell, Charles (Sandy) Degen of Alexandria, SD, Charlotte (Arland) Lindsley of Piedmont, SD; a sister-in-law, Pat Degen of Sioux Falls, SD and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Jacque Degen and brother, Theodore Degen Jr.

I am so sorry to hear of Arnie's death. Our family relied on him. If we were going out of town we'd notify Arnie and ask him to keep the girl's cars running should something break down. Believe it of not, just this past Sunday I was washing off the winter filth and thought of Arnie. He really scolded me once saying "if you don't get those bugs washed off you aren't going to have any paint left on that car". Needless to say, his words have stayed with me for over 20 years. He was a good guy.

Oh my , I dreaded this day to come . I will try my hardest to come see you Arnie . The weather is suppose to be terrible . You will be greatly missed . However , our memories will live on forever .Rest in Peace , my friend .
