George Larson, 93, Mitchell, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007 at Avera Queen Of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, 10:30 a.m. at the Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon. Burial will be in the Mount Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8p.m. Wednesday evening at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Memorial gifts may be directed to the Gideons International.
George Edwin Larson was born March 7, 1914 at Mount Vernon, SD to Ole S. and Gertrude (Loon) Larson. The family became charter members of the Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon and he remained a member until his death. He attended the Bierce School, District 15 for eight years then graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1933. He remained on the farm and helping his father in his animal health business. When he was 22 he moved to Seattle, WA for three years. He returned home in the spring of 1939 to open an animal health branch office in Sioux Falls. On June 30, 1939 he married Marie F. Anderson at her home near Storla. He returned to the farm in 1945 until 1993 when they moved to Mitchell. He also worked for the Soil Conservation District and the State Training School in Plankinton, SD. He was an active member of the Salem Lutheran Church where he taught Bible studies and distributed Bibles with the Gideons International. He enjoyed working with youth and was involved in the spiritual welfare of the prison system through the Chaplain programs.
George is survived by three sons: David (Lois) Larson, Camrose, Alberta, Canada; Daniel Larson, Tacoma, WA; Mark (Sydney) Larson, Arcata, CA; one daughter, MaeLou Larson, Federal Way, WA; one sister, Sara Congdon, Greyland, WA; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie, four brothers: Kenneth, Howard, Alfred and Richard, and one sister, Lillian.
