Evelyn Eileen Saville was born October 9, 1924 on the family farm near Mount Sterling, Crawford County, WI to Torkel and Anna (Thompson) Asbenson. At six months of age, she moved near Storla, SD in Belford Township with her family in 1925. She attended Thompson Grade School, Letcher High School and graduated from Hopper High School in 1941. From 1941-1943, she attended Dakota Wesleyan University and Augustana College for her two-year teaching degree. She married Merlyn Saville on November 19, 1944 and lived and worked on the Saville family homestead northeast of Plankinton. Evelyn taught at Hopper School until 1946. Evelyn went back to teaching at the Plankinton Public School in 1966. She attended summer school at Dakota Wesleyan for several years after that, getting her bachelor’s degree in teaching. Merlyn passed away in 1968. Evelyn taught for 21 years at Plankinton School and retired in 1987. During retirement, she enjoyed spending several winters in Texas. She lived in Plankinton until 2009 at which time she moved to an assisted living home in Mitchell, and then in 2011 she moved to Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake. She was a member of the Aurora County Historical Society, the Storla Lutheran Church, and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Plankinton.
She enjoyed playing the piano and organ starting at an early age with her family. In her younger years, she taught piano lessons and accompanied for many of her family members on their various instruments. In her later years, you could often find her playing the piano or organ at the nursing home for other residents.
Evelyn is survived by her two sons: John (Ann Harless) Saville and David (Kristi) Saville of Plankinton; four grandchildren: Lona (Marvin) Bass, Hutchinson, KS; Marty (Margaret) Saville, Sioux City, IA; Evette (Greg) Rihanek, Plankinton; Suzette (Scott) Black, Plankinton; eleven great-grandchildren: Alexie and Zoe Bass, Hutchinson, KS; Ian, George, Forrest, and Jasper Saville, Sioux City, IA; Devin, Dane, Dacey, and Dylan Rihanek, Plankinton; and Astrea Black, Plankinton; one sister, Thelma Gjesdal, Mitchell; and numerous nieces and nephews. ‘
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merlyn; sisters: Laura Kvigne, Arlene Thompson, Jurene Gjesdal; brother, Luverne Asbenson; daughter-in-law, Jo-lee Saville; and infant great-granddaughter, Josephine Jo-lee Saville.
