Mildred Elaine "“Millie”" Gritzmacher was born on March 22, 1936 in Mitchell, SD to Charles Vincent and Maude (Shroyer) Pollard. She attended grade school in Brule County and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1954. In 1955 she married Maynard Helgeland. To this union three children were born: Kenneth Helgeland, Lori, and Steve. The family lived in Mitchell and Council Bluffs, IA where Millie was employed at Lutheran Medical Center for several years.
In 1980 she married Lester Gritzmacher in Stillwater, MN and was employed as a pharmacy technician in Wisconsin. They moved back to Millie's home town of Mount Vernon where she worked in food service at the Mount Vernon School, and was also an employee of Wermers' Lounge for many years; up until her 80th birthday. Millie spent a majority of her life caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, an avid Mount Vernon and DWU supporter and spent much of her free time attending all of her grandchildren’s activities.
She is survived by her three children: Kenneth Helgeland of Mount Vernon, Lori (David) Renken of Mount Vernon, Steve (Wanda) Helgeland of Box Elder; six grandchildren: Amanda (Darin), Kalla (Kelly), Shanna, Cody, Alex and Mason and three great-grandchildren: Max, Addison and Kash; two sisters: Marian Powers of Kimball, Roberta (Charles) Olsen of Mount Vernon; one brother, Robert Pollard of Mount Vernon and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Maude and C.V. Pollard, her husband's, Maynard and Lester.
